Three day plan
If you are in town for only three days, you definitely want to dive
right in and get the most out of your Shanghai experience. Hotels
near the People's Square, the Bund, or Huaihai Lu are all excellent
jumping off points for Shanghai's most quintessential sites. Transportation
is also convenient.
Day one
Morning: Tour the Bund architecture first thing in the morning,
and take a stroll down Nanjing Lu and Fuzhou Lu. From there you can
walk, take a bus, or cab to Chenghuang Miao (City God Temple) and
sample some local snacks like a basket of small Nanxiang-style stuffed
steamed buns.
Afternoon: visit Chenghuang Miao and than to see the Yu Yuan
Garden and Chen Xiang Ge Pavilion. On weekends, you can buy discounted
books at the Wenmiao Confucian Temple book fair, before heading over
to the Shanghai Old Street and Cangbao Lou curio market. If you still
have time and want to check out more curios, then quickly move on
to the Dongtai Lu Curio Market. Keep in mind that the Dongtai Lu curio
market closes at 5 pm
Day two
Morning: First, go visit the
Jade Buddan Temple and then take a cab over to Moganshan Lu to tour
the art exhibits at the Art Warehouse. From there you can move on
to Duolun Lu and the Lu Xun Residence before sitting down to lunch
in one of the restaurants along Sichuan Zhongl Lu.
Afternoon: Take a bus or a taxi to the Rui Jin Guest
House and then walk to Sinan Lu. After visiting the Sun Yat-sen and
Zhou Enlai Residences, move on to Xintiandi to visit the site of the
first National Communist Party Congress. Have dinner in a local Shanghainese
restaurant near Shikumen. After dinner you can relax in one of the
nearby bars or cafes. Prepare your camera for some splendid nighttime
photography at Shikumen, and than go to Fuxing Park's Park 97 to witness
the p0arade of Shanghai's fashionable people at play.
Day three
Morning: Go to Xujiahui Catholic
Church and the Xiujiahui library first thing in the morning before
moving on to the Xiujiahui Commercial Street. Afterwards, you can
take a car or bus to Huaihai Zhonglu to visit the Song Qingling Residence
and the Shanghai Library, before moving on the Fenyang Lu and Dongping
Lu. Have lunch in one of the eateries along these two roads and snap
a few pictures of the old house nearby.
Afternoon: head to Huahai Lu for some shopping and
then stop in at the Moller Villa for a cup of coffee. Finally, end
your trip with dinner at Xijia Huayuang, Ouyue Niandai or one of the
other restaurants along Julu Road.
Seven day plan
Seven days in Shanghai is more than enough time to carefully explore
Shanghai's essential tourist sites and check out a few other places
as well. The seven day plan will allow you to add a great deal of
variety to you trip. Hotels around the People's Square, Nanjing Xilu,
Xizang Zhonglu, and Huaihai Zhonglu are all excellent locations to
set up home base.
Day one
Morning: Tour the classic architecture
along the Bund and go for a walk along Nangjing Lu and Fuzhou Lu.
Be sure to have lunch at Laobanzhai, Laozhengxing, or one of the traditional
restaurants along Fuzhou Lu.
Afternoon: First, take a stroll through the People's
Square and then go check out some of the attractions nearby such as
the Daguangming Movie Theater, Shanghai Grand Theater, Shanghai Museum
and the Shanghai Art Museum. Afternoons you can pay a visit to the
Shanghai Concert Hall. As evening approaches, take a bus or a cab
to Lujiazui. For a a spectacular sunset view, ride the elevator up
to Jin mao Tower's Cloud Nine Bar or the observation deck on the 88th
floor.
Day two
Morning: Spend the morning
at Chenghuang Miao, Yu Yuan Garden and Shanghai Lao Jie (shanghai
Old Street). Have lunch near Chenghuang Miao or on Shanghai Lao Jie.
Afternoon: Shop for curios on Dongtai Lu and then
visit the Dongjiadu Catholic Church. There is a fabric market on the
South Bund, where you can have clothes custom made
Day three
Morning: Stroll through the
East China University of Politics and Law's western campus and then
burn some incense at Jingan Si Temple. From here you can go on to
visit the residence of legendary author, Zhang Ailing, before heading
to Nanjing Xilu or the Jingan Xiaoting Pavilion. Have lunch along
Tongren Lu or Jingan Xilu.
Afternoon: Visit the Moller Villa and then walk over
to the Orthodox Eastern `Church. From here you can catch a film at
the Cathay Theater and go shopping on Maoming Nanlu. Maoming Naolu
is a great place for dinner and spend the rest of the eveing.
Day four
Morning: Tour the Taiyuan Villa
and then go to the White House at 76 Fenyang Lu. When you are finished
there, move onto Aihu on Dongping Lu. Lunch at Sasha's is recommended.
Afternoon: Go see Rui Jin Guest House and walk over
to Sinan Lu. From there you can visit the Sun Yat-sen and Zhou Enlai
residences and continue on to Xintiaodi, and the site of the first
National Communist Party Congress. Have dinner nearby and then relax
in a Xintiandi bar or café. You many also want to head to Fuxing Park's
Park 97 to party with the fashion set.
Day five
Morning: First tour the Community
Church on Hengshan Lu and then move on to the Xujiahui Catholic Church
and church library.
Afternoon: Pay a visit to the Song Qingling Resdidence
and then have a look at the Shanghai Library. Have dinner on Huaihai
Zhonglu and catch a melodrama at the Lyceum or Majestic Theater.
Day six
Morning: Explore the Jade Buddha
Temple and have lunch at the temple's vegetarian restaurant.
Afternoon: Tour art galleries at the Moganshan Lu
Art Warehouse and along the Suzhou River. Day
seven
Go out to visit Fudan Univercity, Duolun Lu and the Lu Xun Residence.
From here you can continue to explore Sichuan Beilu. Use the rest
of your time in one of the city's famous shopping center looking
for souvenirs and gifts to take home.
Ten Day Plan
Ten days give you ample time to really dig below the city's surface.
After making you way through the 10 activities listed above, you
can spend a day or two touring the sites outside of town like the
Longhua Si Temple, Zhujiajiao, or She Shan Mountain. Take a full
day to stroll along the Bund, Chenghuang Miao, Fenyang Lu, or a
half day on Shaoxiang Lu, Tongren Lu and Xintiandi. Fully explore
the Moller Villa, Grand Hall, Rui Jin Guest House, and sip coffee
in Face Café. Do not forget to see a Shanghai-style melodrama at
the Yifu, Lyceum or Majestic Theater. If feel so inclined, you can
also sneak in a circus performance at the Shanghai Circus World.
With the amount of time you have, there is no need to get up early
in the morning and come home too late. Stay in transportation-friendly
People's Square, Nanjing Xilu, Xizang ZhongLu, or Huaihai ZhongLu.
Or, you may want to consider a hotel at Xujiahui, Henghan Lu, Zhongshan
BeiLu, or Yan'an Lu.
Two Weeks Plan
Two weeks in Shanghai will allow you to really settle in and enjoy
the city. Be sure to make details travel plans and thoroughly explore
Shanghai's hidden corners and small alleys. Before you leave, it
is suggested you read up on Shanghai's history and learn a little
bit more about the places you are going to visit. This will add
an extra element of depth to your trip, and turn you vacation into
a journey of discovery that will leave you with a lifetime of memories.
Photography buffs should take advantage of the more relaxed schedule.
The stretch around Chenghuang Miao and Dongjiadu has great alleys
worth shooting. You also need to check out the Sian Lu, Fuxing XiLu,
and Duolun Lu. Danshan Lu, Sichuan ZhongLu, and Suzhou River offer
photogenic old resident architecture and villa-style garden residences.
Living accommodations should be booked according to you plans. You
may choose to find a place near Xujiahui, Hengshan Lu, Zhongshang
BeiLu, or Yan'an ZhongLu. Hotels in these sleepy residential areas
tend to be quieter and relatively inexpensive. It will also give
you a better opportunity to see how the local Shanghainese live.
