Taxi
The majority of the cars in Shanghai's fleet of
taxis are Volkswagen Santanas and Pasats, although
there are a few Mercedes sprinkled in as well. Prices
do not change according to the type of car you get,
so if you manage to flag down a Mercedes, consider
yourself lucky.
Taxi fares start at 11 RMB and increase 2.1 RMB
fro every kilometer past the third kilometer mark.
If your journey surpasses ten kilometers then the
per kilometer price goes up another fifty percent.
During the evening (between 11 pm and 5 am) taxi
fairs start at 13 RMB and increase by 2.6 RMB passed
the third
kilometer. Per kilometer prices still increase
by fifty percent passed the tenth kilometer. There
are no toll fees for any bridge tunnel, or overpass
in urban Shanghai. If you need to go to a far-away
location or to a bustling area (like Hengshan Lu)
in the evening, you can try to get the cab driver
to give you a 20% discount or to run the meter at
the daytime price. When you bargain, do it before
and not after you have stepped into the cab.
