The original Drum Tower goes back over 700 years to the Yuan Dysnasty reign of Kublai Khan. Back in the Ming Dynasty, the drums in the Drum Tower were beaten to give the correct time of day. Today, on the second floor, there is a drum-beating performance every half hour, lasting about three minutes each time.
100 m north sits the Bell Tower, which dates back to 1420. The tower’s original iron bell was deemed too quiet, so it was replaced with a huge bronze one, whose casing was over 10 inches thick. The bronze bell, which is still there and in perfect condition, can be heard as far as 20 km away.
Standing on the Drum Tower or the Bell Tower, you’ll get the best aerial view of the surrounding Hutong alley community.
