There are only two dagobas in Beijing: one if in Beihai Park, the other in this temple. The temple is officially called Temple of Resourceful Response and commonly known as White Dagoba Temple.
Designed and built in 1271 by a Nepalese architect under Kublai Khan’s order, the 50.9-m-tall dagoba is much older and more famous than the temple itself. The temple has undergone destruction by fire and subsequent reconstruction several times; it is now a beautifully presented collection of Tibetan Buddhist artifacts and art. A magnitude 7.8 earthquake in 1976 (the world’s deadliest in 400 years that took 240,000 lives in Tanshan, 140 km from Beijing) actually unearthed artifacts that are now on display. The Hall of Great Enlightenment houses an optically impressive collection of thousands of tiny Buddhas.
